I had knee surgery at the end of February and only one month later I was staying at Hotel Schwarzer Adler in Sankt Anton. Those days would mark my first days back on the skis. Making a comeback after an injury always leaves me with a feeling of uneasiness. Meniscus removal is a rather minor surgery. Still, I was concerned about how my knee would react to skiing.
The weather was particularly mild at the end of March and we would have the best conditions for skiing in spring. I really love being in the mountains when it’s warm, so I was thrilled with anticipation.
I arrived at the hotel in the afternoon and soon headed for the outdoor pool to enjoy the warm weather. Whatever the weather conditions are, I always enjoy looking at the mountains from the pool; being able to relax at the sun terrace at that time of the year, however, was my absolute highlight.
Having dinner in the hotel restaurant was the perfect completion of our relaxed day of arrival. We felt more than welcome in the large rooms.
First thing I saw next morning were the slopes – enough motivation for skiing. I had to be patient, however, because breakfast came first and it would have been a shame to miss it. The breakfast had everything you need and was the perfect way to start the day. I was able to save the time I had just spent on having breakfast, however, when I went to the ski lift. Yes, you can simply walk. No drive needed. A short walk and you are directly in front of the Galzigbahn cable car which will take you to the extensive and challenging skiing area.
There’s little to say about the day in the mountains. Warm weather, spring skiing and sunshine. The skiing area lives up to its promises – the Arlberg has its excellent reputation for a reason. I used the day to explore the whole area from Sankt Anton to Lech. Of course, I also made a stop at a ski hut to have an après-ski beer in a relaxed atmosphere.
The best thing that happened to me that day, however, was that my knee did not thwart my skiing adventure. I was more than happy to be able to do what I love doing after having been confined to my bed for so long. Because of that break, however, I was a bit worn out in the evening. After all, I had lost some of my substance during the time I had not been able to move around. But I had a plan: A massage as well as a visit to the sauna would bring me back into shape for the next skiing day. I visited several saunas and had my entire body pampered with a well-being massage, leaving me in a state of pure relaxation.
Then another perfect dinner, a drink at the bar and a fresh start at the next day – I’d love to have skiing trips like this all the time. Dear team at Hotel Schwarzer Adler: Thank you for making my stay that perfect.
