Our responsibility

The Schwarzer Adler looks back on a history dating all the way to 1570. For generations, our family has been closely connected to St. Anton am Arlberg and the surrounding region. Today, we continue to look carefully at how we use energy and resources throughout the hotel. Rather than making general promises, we prefer to show the concrete measures we have already implemented.

100% electricity from hydropower

Hydropower has a long tradition in St. Anton am Arlberg. The Rosanna hydroelectric power plant was built as early as 1921 – our grandfather, who was mayor at the time, was involved in its development. According to the electricity origin certificate, 100% of the electricity we purchase comes from hydropower.* Our electric vehicle charging stations are also supplied through the hotel’s electricity system.

HEAT FROM THE DISTRICT HEATING NETWORK

Since 2020, we have sourced the energy required for heating and hot water from the district heating network of the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg. This replaced the hotel’s former oil-fired heating system. Before the changeover, our annual heating oil consumption was approximately 100,000 litres. The district heating network is operated using biomass in the form of wood chips.

Naturally clean!

Cleanliness and hygiene are, of course, an essential part of a pleasant hotel stay.

For cleaning, we use products from hollu. For selected products used in our hotel, we pay attention to recognised environmental certifications such as the Austrian Ecolabel or the EU Ecolabel. These certifications define specific requirements for areas such as ingredients, packaging and the performance of the respective certified products.

Again and again…

In our restaurant and bar, we use reusable bottles for non-alcoholic beverages. More than 17,000 refillable bottles are used in this way every year. Glass bottles for which no reusable alternative is available are collected separately and sent for glass recycling.

... and again

For our menus, daily morning newsletter, hotel information and other printed materials, we use paper made from 100% recycled fibres.* At the same time, we provide information digitally wherever this is practical for our guests. Through PressReader, for example, guests can access a wide range of international newspapers and magazines digitally.

Short journeys

Our employees are locals or they are living in one of our staff rooms nearby the hotel. So long distance drives to work – no chance!

Travelling is also easy for our guests: St. Anton am Arlberg railway station is centrally located in the village and only a few minutes’ walk from our hotel. St. Anton is directly connected to Austria’s national and international long-distance rail network, making it possible to travel to and from the resort without a car. And for guests arriving by electric vehicle, charging stations are available directly at the hotel.

Local partners

Where availability, quality and supply allow, we work with producers and suppliers from Tyrol and the surrounding region. We also use selected products carrying recognised certifications, such as organic or Fairtrade certification. For us, what matters is not a general promise, but the specific origin and quality of the products we choose for our guests.

HISTORIC WALLS & MODERN TECHNOLOGY

The history of our hotel dates back to 1570. Over the generations, the Schwarzer Adler has been repeatedly renovated, refurbished and technically modernised. Today, our hotel uses technologies including modern building controls, heat recovery systems and thermal insulation. This allows us to continue using our historic building fabric while incorporating contemporary building technology

We continuously develop our measures in the areas of energy, heating, cleaning, reusable packaging, paper and mobility. Above all, we want to communicate transparently about what we actually do – using information that is as concrete and verifiable as possible.
